Asombroso Extra Añejo is a 100% blue Weber agave tequila from Jalisco, Mexico. It is made at NOM 1146, in the Tequila valley. The agave is cooked in an autoclave and twice distilled in a copper pot still. Then it rests for five years in new French oak.
Those years give it a deep tawny color and a full body. Critics often compare it to an aged cognac or Armagnac. The nose opens sweet and delicate, with honey first. Vanilla, caramel and a little oak follow. Some tasters also find a little chocolate and raisin.
On the palate, honey widens into vanilla, buttercream and toffee. Butterscotch and caramel keep it rich and dessert-like. Cooked agave stays quietly in the background. It finishes smooth, with a soft caramel note.
Robb Report named it one of its Best of the Best. It is a bottle that feels right for birthdays, anniversaries and other big nights.
This tequila is made for slow sipping. Use a snifter rather than a shot glass, and drink it neat or over one large cube. Pair it with flan, crème brûlée, dark chocolate or mild cheeses. If you enjoy well-aged spirits, it is a lovely bottle to share after dinner.
