Bowman Brothers Small Batch is a Virginia straight bourbon from the A. Smith Bowman Distillery near Fredericksburg. It honors four Bowman brothers who served as militia officers in the Revolutionary War. Sazerac has owned the distillery since 2003.
The mash uses corn, rye and malted barley. The spirit is distilled three times in copper, which gives it a lighter feel. It then ages in new charred oak and is bottled in small batches at 90 proof.
Lift the glass and you'll smell brown sugar, cinnamon, vanilla and baked apple. Your first sip brings more vanilla with toasted oak and gentle baking spice. Some reviewers also find caramel on the nose and toffee on the palate. It stays fairly dry, so the sweetness never takes over. The finish turns spicy, with cinnamon, pepper and dry oak.
Judges like it as well. It won Double Gold at the 2020 San Francisco World Spirits Competition. It also took gold at the 2020 International Spirits Challenge and the 2020 North American Bourbon & Whiskey Competition. In 2019 it earned gold at the Los Angeles International Spirits Competition and the American Whiskey Masters.
Sip it neat, pour it over ice or stir it into an Old Fashioned. Smoked meats, grilled pork and pecan pie all suit it. If you usually reach for flavored whiskey, this is a smart classic to try next. It also suits any whiskey shelf.
