Coppola Diamond Collection Claret originates from the United States, specifically from various vineyard sites across the California region. The winery was established in 2006 when filmmaker Francis Ford Coppola purchased the historic Château Souverain property in Sonoma County. Inspired by his Italian heritage and a desire to create a 'wine wonderland', Coppola focuses on producing high quality wines that celebrate the love of life, food, and family. The Claret serves as the flagship or 'crown jewel' of the Diamond Collection, with a distinctive gold netting on the bottle that pays tribute to European traditions of signifying outstanding quality.
Wine Description
This red blend presents a dark ruby or deep crimson colour with purple reflections. The sensory profile is rich and aromatic, offering a fragrant nose of blueberry, black cherry, and cassis, complemented by notes of clove, vanilla, and toasted oak. On the full bodied palate, it is luscious and sophisticated, delivering flavours of blackberry, plum, and black pepper alongside layers of cocoa and baking spices. The structure is defined by firm yet velvety tannins and a supple texture, leading to a long, satisfying finish with hints of anise and spice.
Varietal Composition: Typically a Cabernet Sauvignon based blend, often including Merlot, Petit Verdot, Malbec, and Cabernet Franc.
Stylistic Notes: Portions of the wine are aged for up to 12 months in a combination of French and American oak to enhance complexity and character.
Organic Status: While the winery emphasizes sustainable practices and earth friendly production, this specific wine is not typically certified organic.
Food Pairing
The bold character and balanced acidity of this Claret make it an ideal companion for hearty and savoury dishes. Suggested pairings include grilled ribeye steak, rack of lamb, and porcini mushroom risotto. It also complements spicy BBQ ribs, grilled hamburgers, and pasta served with rich red sauces. For a cheese course, it pairs well with strong, aged varieties such as sharp cheddar or gouda.
