D. George Benham’s Barrel Finished Gin is a barrel-rested expression of Benham’s Sonoma Dry Gin, finished in American oak barrels to add color and wood character to the botanical base. The botanical recipe includes juniper, coriander, Meyer lemon, Buddha’s Hand citrus, chamomile, peppermint, orris root, cardamom, grains of paradise, and angelica — unchanged from the original gin recipe, with the oak providing additional layering.
Barrel-aged gin occupies a specific category: it retains all the botanical character of the base gin while the oak aging softens the spirit and adds vanilla, caramel, and wood tannin. Benham’s uses American oak specifically, which contributes more vanilla and coconut than French oak would. The Buddha’s Hand citrus is a distinctive botanical choice — an unusual citrus variety with intense floral-citrus fragrance and no fruit flesh.
Tasting Notes
Nose: Juniper, citrus peel, vanilla, and light oak. Palate: Botanical gin character with caramel, vanilla, and wood spice from barrel aging. Finish: Smooth, warm, and oak-integrated.
