Ole Smoky Original Moonshine is legal — just barely — a 100-proof unaged corn whiskey made from an 80% corn mash using a hundred-year-old recipe at Ole Smoky's Gatlinburg distillery, Tennessee's first licensed moonshine distillery, harkening back to the renegade attitude of its forefathers with a crystal-clear, fresh-corn spirit meant to be drunk from the jar.
Ole Smoky opened in Gatlinburg in 2010 as the first distillery legally licensed under Tennessee's new distillery law — making legal what generations of Appalachian families had been doing quietly in the mountains. The Original Moonshine is that heritage in a mason jar: 80% corn, 20% a closely guarded secret, distilled to 100 proof, and bottled crystal clear without any oak aging. The aroma is fresh corn with a touch of sweetness and a hint of butter — exactly what unaged corn whiskey from a proper Appalachian recipe smells like. Highly drinkable and hardly pretentious. Fire up your Saturday night.
