Introduction
This red wine comes from France, specifically the Bordeaux region, in the appellation of Pauillac. Pastourelle de Clerc Milon is the second wine of Château Clerc Milon, a Cinquième Grand Cru Classé (Fifth Growth) in the 1855 Bordeaux Wine Official Classification. The estate, located in the northern part of the appellation, is contiguous with the vineyards of two First Growths, Château Mouton Rothschild and Château Lafite Rothschild. Château Clerc Milon has been owned by Baron Philippe de Rothschild and his family since 1970. The wine's name, 'Pastourelle,' refers to a traditional dance that symbolizes the romantic encounter between a knight and a shepherdess, echoing the two dancers featured on the Grand Vin's label.
Wine Description
The 2022 vintage is noted for being a ripe, medium to full-bodied, and concentrated second wine, considered one of the best examples of this cuvée to date. The colour is typically described as a deep garnet-purple or a deep ruby red with a distinct purple hue.
The aroma is expressive, bursting with notes of juicy blueberries, kirsch, red fruits, violets, and black plum. Tertiary notes of underbrush, sandalwood, dried sage, cigar wrapper, and subtle pencil shavings also emerge. The varietal composition is a blend, primarily composed of 52% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Franc, 2% Carmenère, and 1% Petit Verdot.
On the palate, the wine is plump, juicy, and rounded in texture, with flavours of ripe dark fruits such as blackcurrant, blackberry, and plum. Stylistically, it is described as plush, highly accessible, and a crowd-pleaser, with elegance and precision. It features soft, cushioned, and velvety tannins that are well-integrated, providing structure without being assertive. It possesses just enough freshness and a lively character. The finish is clean, with notes of blueberry, mint chocolate, pepper, or cocoa powder, and a good length. The wine is aged in second-fill barrels (used oak) for approximately twelve months, with some portion aged in amphorae, and no new oak is typically used. The alcohol by volume (ABV) is 14.5%, or 14.47% as measured. The optimal drinking window is noted as starting around 2025 to 2034. Information on the wine being organic is not available, though the Grand Vin estate farms close to 50% of its vines using organic techniques.
