Scheuermann Riesling Trocken is a dry white wine made from 100% Riesling sourced from multiple parcels around Niederkirchen and Bad Durkheim in the Pfalz. Vines are 10 to 30 years old, planted in sandstone and loess soils at around 400 feet elevation. The estate holds certified organic and biodynamic status, with organic cultivation in place since 2012.
Fermentation is spontaneous with indigenous yeasts in stainless steel tanks. The wine spends six months on the lees before bottling with no fining, no filtration, and no sulfur additions. The result is a lean, textural Riesling that sits closer to the mineral-driven whites of Alsace than to the residual-sugar styles Germany is historically associated with.
Brothers Gabriel and Simon Scheuermann run the estate out of Niederkirchen, with Simon managing the vineyards and Gabriel working the cellar. Their stated aim is to make wine that reflects the Pfalz specifically, not German wine as a category, drawing comparison to the stripped-back, lees-driven style of producers like Pepiere in Muscadet.
Serve well chilled at 48 to 52F. No decanting needed. Drink now through 2024.
