Trolley 5 Czech Pilsner (often referred to as their Trolley Light) is a staple lager from Calgary’s Trolley 5 Brewpub on 17th Avenue. While the brewery is known for its "Beltline" vibes and approachable lineup, this beer is a nod to the traditional pilsners of the Czech Republic. It is designed to be a "clean, crisp, and classic" lager that offers more character and a more structured bitterness than a standard North American light beer, while still being the most sessionable option on their tap list.
Beer Description
Trolley Light pours a brilliant, crystal-clear pale straw color with a bright white head and a steady stream of lively carbonation.
Aroma: The nose is clean and refreshing. It leads with a delicate scent of freshly cracked grain and honeyed biscuit, followed by the unmistakable "noble" aroma of Saaz hops providing a soft, floral, and slightly spicy perfume that is the hallmark of the style.
Palate: On the tongue, it is light-bodied with a crisp, "snappy" mouthfeel. It leads with a subtle malt sweetness, which is quickly balanced by a firm, refreshing bitterness. The finish is remarkably dry and clean, with a tiny hint of herbal spice that lingers just long enough to invite another sip.
Profile: It sits at a very approachable 4.0% ABV (depending on the specific batch/seasonal tweak) and a moderate bitterness of approx. 20–25 IBU.
Technical Notes: True to the Czech style, this beer utilizes Pilsner malt for its light color and bready flavor. It is hopped exclusively with Czech Saaz hops, which are famous for their earthy, spicy complexity. The beer undergoes a traditional cold-lagering process to ensure a "polished" finish and exceptional clarity, removing the fruity esters typically found in the brewery's IPAs.
