Introduction
This powerful red wine hails from Cornas, the southernmost red-wine appellation of the Northern Rhône, famous for its "burnt earth" (Cornas in old Celtic) and sun-drenched granite terraces. Maison J. Denuzière has a storied heritage dating back to 1876, when Joanny Paret began distributing local wines via horse-drawn cart. Today, under the direction of oenologist Caroline Moro, the estate has transitioned from a historic négoce firm into a high-end domaine focusing on "micro-cuvées" that emphasize freshness and varietal precision. Their Cornas is primarily sourced from the "En Sauman" lieu-dit, a 1.2-hectare plot of steep, weathered granite terraces that produce some of the most concentrated and characterful Syrah in the valley.
Wine Description
J. Denuzière Cornas presents a deep, inky ruby color with violet reflections. The nose is classic and intense, offering a complex bouquet of blackberry, scorched earth, and crushed granite, layered with savory notes of leather, black pepper, and dried herbs. On the palate, the wine is muscular and robust, showcasing a dense core of dark plum and cassis fruit balanced by a striking mineral tension. It is characterized by its firm, "upright" tannins and a persistent finish marked by woodsmoke and salted licorice. This 100% Syrah typically has an ABV of 13.5% to 14% and was aged for approximately 15 to 18 months in French oak barrels (225L and 600L demi-muids) to soften its rugged structure while preserving its volcanic soul.
